To deal with low-level of service satisfaction at tollbooths of many turnpikes in China, we conduct an empirical study and use a queueing model to investigate performance measures. In this paper, we collect archived data from six tollbooths of a turnpike in China. Empirical analysis on vehicle's time-dependent arrival process and collector's time-dependent service time is conducted. It shows that the vehicle arrival process follows a non-homogeneous Poisson process while the collector service time follows a log-normal distribution. Further, we model the process of collecting tolls at tollbooths with MAP/PH/1/FCFS queue for mathematical tractability and present some numerical examples. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
