Full duplex (FD) communication can potentially double the throughput of a point-to-point link However, to achieve such benefits, it is necessary to design FD medium access control (MAC) protocols. From the viewpoint of using control frames to adjust FD-frame transmission timing, the FD MAC protocols are classified into two types; synchronous FD MAC and asynchronous one. However, quantitative evaluation of the effectiveness of these protocols in wireless local area networks (WLANs) has not been obtained. This paper proposes throughput analysis for FD WLANs under the consideration of hidden nodes collisions. For obtaining that, two Markov-chain models are used in this paper. The one expresses the core operation of FD MAC protocols, and another expresses a frame-retransmission process. Through the proposed model, the potential of two major types of FD MAC protocols can be evaluated quantitatively.
