This paper presents an energy-efficient high data rate transmitter for proximity mobile connectivity. A carrier based ultra-wideband (UWB) transmitter is designed with pulse shaping to generate regulation-compliant spectrum without bulky filters. The BPSK function to suppress discrete tones is integrated in an OOK modulator for low power, and a single-phase PLL is used for robust pulse shaping. A hybrid pre-correction method effectively mitigates the inter-symbol interference (IS!) A prototype 6-9GHz transmitter is implemented in 65nm CMOS. Experimental results show that the transmitter supports a maximum data rats of 2.5Gb/s, achieving an energy efficiency of 3.6pJ/b with 9mW power consumption.
