This paper describes a robust phase-tracking receiver (PTRX) design with offset-free demodulation in the baseband by utilizing a fully-balanced FSK, namely, frequency-domain OOK (F-OOK) modulation. Carrier frequency offset (CFO) and phase offset problems are critical in the sensitivity performance of the PTRX. This work shows that the performance degradation of the PTRX due to the CFO and the phase offset can he significantly mitigated with the fully-balanced FSK modulation. Performance of the F-OOK receiver is analyzed in comparison with the conventional BFSK receiver, and the data-pattern-insensitive demodulation capability is verified in a prototype 100kb/s 2.4GHz receiver implemented in 65nm CMOS.
