A Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium, named wh15(inverted perpendicular), was isolated from the waste water of a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Wuhu, PR China. The taxonomic status of the strain was characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Growth occurred at 15-45 degrees C (optimum, 25-40 degrees C), at pH 5.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and with 0-4% NaCl (optimum, 1-2 %). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that wh15(inverted perpendicular) represented a member of genus Flavobacterium and shared the highest similarity with Flavobacterium ummariense DS-12(inverted perpendicular) (93.93 %), Flavobacterium ceti 454-2(inverted perpendicular) (93.71 %) and Flavobacterium marinum SW105(inverted perpendicular) (93.63 %). The major respiratory quinone of wh15 T was MK-6 and major fatty acids were iso-C-15 : 0, iso-C-15 : 0 3-OH, iso-C-17 : 0 3-OH, summed feature 3 (C-16 : 1 omega 7c and/or C-16 : 1 omega 6c) and summed feature 9 (iso-C-17 : 1 omega 9c and/or C-16 : 0 10-methyl). The DNA G+C content of wh15(inverted perpendicular) was 32.3 mol%. Phenotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic evidence indicated that wh15(inverted perpendicular) represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, the name Flavobacterium cloacae is proposed. The type strain is wh15(inverted perpendicular)(= CCTCC AB 2015420(inverted perpendicular) = JCM 31173(inverted perpendicular)).
