We numerically predict the microstructure properties of ceramic membranes and the coupling effects of microstructure properties and layer thickness on the strength and permeance of ceramic membranes. It is found that particle size is the most important factor, followed by thickness and finally by microstructure parameters. The general design principle for strength and permeance are ht sigma thsKt sigma sKs and hthsKtKs respectively, with sigma, h, and K the strength, thickness and permeability, while the subscript s and t represent the support and sintered layer, respectively.
