The targeted construction strategy for discrete metal boron-imidazolate cages to 2D frameworks is successfully realized by tetradentate boron-imidazolate acting as cage ligands and bridge linker of frameworks. This work may help us to understand the formation mechanism of extended open frameworks. Also, the cubic cages exhibited the photocatalytic behaviour of MB. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
