Enneanuclear lanthanide(III) hydroxo coordination clusters with an hourglass- or sandglass-like topology have been synthesized via 2-hydroxybenzophenone-controlled hydrolysis of the metal ions in ethanol; the Eu-9(III) complex displays an intense red, metal-centered emission in the solid state at room temperature which is achieved by an indirect process (antenna effect).
