Technological advances in waste water treatment are vital in view of the more stringent regulations that originate from increased environmental awareness worldwide. Superior variations of the existing technologies such as nanofiltration and micro wave disinfection as well as newer technologies like peracetic acid disinfection and salsnes filter are researched to this effect. Cerium oxide and its solid solutions have tremendous applications in several fields such as sensors, catalysts, solid oxide fuel cells etc. It has also been extensively used in various water treatment processes. The present review highlights the inherent characteristics of cerium oxide like redox properties and oxidation storage capacity that makes it effective in technologies like Advanced Oxidation Processes, adsorption, and filtration. Modifications to ceria such as incorporation of metal and nonmetal atoms to its lattice and dispersion to suitable support that enhances its properties are also given importance. The work presented here provides a perspective on the future technical trends for the development of ceria based materials profitable in environmental applications.
