In present scenario global energy's requirement shows a remarkable rise. Therefore it is mandatory to explore some other alternatives for extracting clean energy. Biomass as a source of energy has gained a huge level of acceptability from across the world because of inexhaustible and non-polluting nature due to its carbon neutralising characteristic. Out of all the feasible conversion technologies, the process of gasification proves economical for extracting energy from biomass for various thermal and power utilisation. In spite of several advancements in the area of gasification, this technology still needs various refinements to match up with the performance of conventional sources of energy. This article presents an inclusive review on the current worldwide scenario of bioenergy, analysis of various gasifiers and feedstocks, the methodology adopted for a gasification process, factors affecting the process of gasification, advancements in syngas conditioning, technical and economic feasibility of gasification and future prospects of gasification.
