A novel printed tri-element diversity antenna for 2.4/5.2-GHz WLAN(wireless local area networks) application is proposed in this paper. The antenna comprises two orthogonal C-shaped monopoles placed symmetrically with respect to dual inverted-L-shaped ground plane and a double-T monopole between them, which generate two separate resonant modes respectively for the desired dual band operations. Effects of varying the distance between the inverted-L (parasitic monopole) ground plane and the case with and without the parasitic monopole on the antenna performance have also been studied. The proposed antenna can provide spatial and pattern diversity to combat multipath fading. Moreover, it can provide a satisfactory channel capacity for MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Out-put) communication systems.
