Revisiting the CO2emission-induced EKC hypothesis in South Asia: the role of Export Quality Improvement

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of export quality on the relationship between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in South Asian economies, and validates the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in the context of Bangladesh and India. The findings show a U-shaped association between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in Pakistan, while economic growth is found to decrease carbon dioxide emissions in Sri Lanka and Nepal. Additionally, improving export quality is found to lead to lower levels of carbon dioxide emissions.

Revisiting the deforestation-induced EKC hypothesis: the role of democracy in Bangladesh

Muntasir Murshed

Summary: This study evaluates the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in Bangladesh between 1971 and 2018, considering the influence of democracy. The results indicate long-term associations between economic growth, deforestation tendencies, and democracy quality. The elasticity estimates support the validity of the EKC hypothesis for various deforestation indicators. Additionally, controlling for democracy lowers the threshold level of growth at which the impact of growth leads to environmental improvements by reducing deforestation in Bangladesh. The findings also demonstrate the combined impact of democracy and economic growth on the growth-deforestation relationship.

Consumption of liquefied petroleum gas and the EKC hypothesis in South Asia: evidence from cross-sectionally dependent heterogeneous panel data with structural breaks

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: This paper explores the authenticity of the EKC hypothesis for six South Asian economies in the context of both aggregate and disaggregated greenhouse emissions. The study validates the existence of the EKC hypothesis and reveals heterogeneity in EKC findings across the countries. Furthermore, it is found that LPG consumption reduces greenhouse emissions in all economies, indicating its potential as a transitional fuel for South Asian countries before transitioning to renewable energy sources.

Oil price shocks and renewable energy transition: Empirical evidence from net oil-importing South Asian economies

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the nonlinear association between renewable energy consumption and crude oil prices in four South Asian economies, suggesting that a threshold level of crude oil price is reached before further hikes can elevate renewable energy consumption. Nonlinearity is also confirmed in the context of oil prices and renewable energy share, with rising oil prices not enhancing renewable electricity shares. The causality results imply that movements in crude oil prices play a role in shaping energy transition in these economies.

The Environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis for deforestation in Bangladesh: An ARDL analysis with multiple structural breaks

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: This study tests the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis in Bangladesh, confirming a nonlinear relationship between economic growth and deforestation practices. The results show that energy consumption promotes deforestation in the long run, while population growth rate and agricultural land expansion lead to greater deforestation in both the short and long terms. Policy implications include effective measures to reduce deforestation practices in Bangladesh.

Modelling renewable energy adoption across south Asian economies: Empirical evidence from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka

Muntasir Murshed et al.

Summary: This study empirically investigates the importance of enhancing trade and foreign capital flows in stimulating the use of renewable energy resources in South Asian countries. The results show that higher degrees of trade openness and greater foreign currency inflows can significantly increase the share of renewables in total energy consumption levels in the region. Therefore, trade and financial policies play a crucial role in facilitating the transition to renewable energy and have key policy implications for energy sustainability in South Asia.
