It takes two to tango: mortgage markets, labor markets and rising household debt in Europe

Alison Johnston et al.

Summary: Household mortgage debt variation in Europe is explained by the intersection of labor market institutions, welfare states, and mortgage finance institutions. Strong collective bargaining institutions and generous welfare states are associated with higher household indebtedness, especially in the presence of housing finance institutions that encourage mortgage lending. Liberal economies have comparatively lower household indebtedness due to labor market institutions inhibiting income security for borrowers. Scholars studying financialization should integrate labor market and welfare state institutions into their analysis to understand how domestic financial systems function.
