By optimizing Si/Al ratio and hydrothermal treatment temperature, a high performance HZSM-5 catalyst was developed for liquid phase dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether (DME). During a long term test of 6788 hours, DME selectivity remained above 99.96% with only slight deactivation observed, primarily attributed to coking and decline of HZSM-5 crystallinity.
