Quantification and source characterization of volatile organic compounds from exercising and application of chlorine-based cleaning products in a university athletic center

Zachary Finewax et al.

Summary: Humans spend majority of their time indoors, where their activities and occupancy impact the air quality. The study found that human VOC emissions during exercise are higher than when individuals are at rest, and are correlated with increased CO2 emissions. Emission factors from personal care products remain consistent with previous studies, and typically decrease throughout the day. Additionally, the study observed the presence of N-chloraldimines in the gas phase after cleaning exercise equipment with a dichlor solution, likely originating from reactions on gym surfaces.
