40 years of sensor fusion for orientation tracking via magnetic and inertial measurement units: Methods, lessons learned, and future challenges

Milad Nazarahari et al.

Summary: Technological advancements in the past two decades have led to the development of more accurate and lightweight MIMUs for extensive applications, specifically in tracking 3D orientation. Research efforts have focused on addressing uncertainties in measurements and developing sensor fusion algorithms to accurately estimate orientation. Early SFAs were vector observation algorithms or extended Kalman filters, while recent works have introduced complementary filter structures for computational efficiency. Various modifications have been proposed to improve SFA performance, such as adaptive gain tuning and imperfect measurement rejection. Benchmarking studies are identified as the current main challenge. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of different SFAs for orientation tracking with MIMUs.
