The scope of the Giese reaction is expanded using readily available alkyl tosylates as substrates and nucleophilic cobalt(i) catalysts under visible-light irradiation, preferentially with less bulky primary alkyl tosylates. This unique reactivity enables the regio-selective Giese reaction of polyol derivatives.
