Effect of sodium silicate on lead release from lead service lines

Anushka Mishrra et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of sodium silicate addition on lead release from lead service lines. It was found that sodium silicate effectively reduced lead concentrations in the water and gradually decreased lead release from the pipes.

Impact of sodium silicate on lead release and colloid size distributions in drinking water

Bofu Li et al.

Summary: Sodium silicate has been used as a corrosion control treatment for lead in drinking water, but it is found to be inferior to orthophosphate in circumneutral pH water with low alkalinity. Excess silicate can also be highly detrimental to controlling lead release.

Controlling lead release due to uniform and galvanic corrosion - An evaluation of silicate-based inhibitors

Bofu Li et al.

Summary: Silicates have been added to drinking water for decades as a corrosion control treatment for lead, but their effectiveness in limiting lead release due to corrosion is not consistent. The presence of silicate formulations may influence the dispersion of lead-rich particles. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms by which silicates interact with lead in different water conditions.
