Nanoscience and technology is a cutting-edge field that has wide applications in various research areas. The study showed that using nano-silica as a partial replacement in cement mortar significantly improved its strength, durability, and microstructure, outperforming conventional mortar. This suggests that crack-free concrete for sustainable building is achievable with the use of nano-silica.
Nanoscience and technology is a modern field of innovation, the foundation for the creation of new scientific technologies. In the areas of research and technology, nanotechnology has applications over other technologies. In this study, the impact of nano-silica on a mortar of 40 nm in diameter is discussed and investigated for improving mechanical properties and long life the pore filling effect and its pozzolanic operation with cement. Compared with conventional mortar, cement mortar is studied with its strength, durability, and microstructure using nano-silica (Nano-SiO2) (NS) as a partial replacement in different percentages such as 0.5 to 2.5 percent. The hardened properties of the mortar were determined by the compressive strength at 7 and 28 days of age on both specimens. To assess steel corrosion, hardness tests have been practiced. Tests of FTIR, XRD, and SEM also established the characterization of NS. The results show that substituting NS for up to 2 percent shows an improved strength, durability, and microstructure of mortar specimens which results in better performance than a conventional one. Therefore, the production of crack-free concrete for sustainable building is feasible. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
