Does post-traumatic stress disorder impact inhibition and flexibility functions beyond exposure to trauma alone? A systematic review of the literature

Wivine Blekic et al.

Summary: The goal of this study is to summarize research on inhibition and flexibility abilities among adults with post-traumatic stress disorder. Following PRISMA guidelines, 52 studies were included and evaluated to investigate the relationship between executive functions and posttraumatic stress symptoms. Three methodological approaches were utilized: standard neuropsychological tools, computerized tasks, and self-reported questionnaires. The study aimed to distinguish results specific to clinical populations from those induced by the experience of traumatic events, and to clarify the links between executive functioning and posttraumatic symptomatology.
