Effect of statin therapy on SARS-CoV-2 infection-related mortality in hospitalized patients

Lluis Masana et al.

Summary: This study suggests that patients admitted for COVID-19 who were treated with statins had a lower mortality rate compared to those not receiving statin therapy. Lower mortality rates were observed in patients who had been on statin therapy prior to hospitalization, indicating that statin therapy should not be discontinued due to the global concern of the pandemic or in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency is associated with COVID-19 disease stage and mortality, particularly in male patients, independent of age, ethnicity, and comorbidities. Male patients with COVID-19 showed progressively lower 25(OH)D levels with advancing radiologic stage, and deficiency on admission was associated with increased mortality risk.

Summary: This study found that obese patients are more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19, and are at higher risk of in-hospital death or mechanical ventilation, particularly if young (age <= 50 years). Additionally, obese patients are also at higher risk for venous thromboembolism and dialysis. These observations support clear public health messaging and rigorous adherence to COVID-19 prevention strategies in all obese individuals regardless of age.

Summary: The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in Europe was officially confirmed at the end of February 2020, but the real impact of COVID-19 in the European Union has not been systematically investigated. This study analyzed the main predictors of mortality rate (MR) in hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, finding that diabetes mellitus, chronic pulmonary obstructive diseases, and malignancies were the best predictors. The study also concluded that MR was higher in the US and Europe compared to Asia, with diabetes, respiratory symptoms, lymphocyte count, and D-dimer levels significantly influencing mortality.
