Capture and Release of Orthophosphate by Fe-Modified Biochars: Mechanisms and Environmental Applications

Santanu Bakshi et al.

Summary: This study engineered biochar for enhanced phosphorus sorption affinity by pre-treating corn stover biomass with FeSO4 and using autothermal pyrolysis. The resulting biochar (ISIB) showed significantly higher P sorption capacity compared to non-treated biochar, with inner-sphere surface complexation and surface precipitation as the main sorption mechanisms. ISIB was effective in removing P from agricultural effluent, suggesting its potential use as a slow-release P fertilizer.

Mitigation of Gaseous Emissions from Stored Swine Manure with Biochar: Effect of Dose and Reapplication on a Pilot-Scale

Baitong Chen et al.

Summary: In an 8-week trial, the bi-weekly reapplication of biochar on stored swine manure significantly reduced emissions of NH3 and odorous VOCs, as well as improved mitigation of other targeted volatile organic compounds. Compared to one-time application, lower doses of biochar with reapplication showed better mitigation effects.

Biochar-Swine Manure Impact on Soil Nutrients and Carbon Under Controlled Leaching Experiment Using a Midwestern Mollisols

Chumki Banik et al.

Summary: Biochar application to soil with swine manure can improve soil quality and reduce nutrient leaching. The study found that the mixture of biochar and manure can be a better soil amendment compared to conventional manure application, leading to increased plant-available nutrients. Overall, the biochar-manure incubation stabilized carbon and nutrients from manure, suggesting its potential to improve agricultural sustainability.

Mitigation of Acute Ammonia Emissions With Biochar During Swine Manure Agitation Before Pump-Out: Proof-of-the-Concept

Baitong Chen et al.

Summary: NH3 emissions from animal agriculture contribute to water ecosystem eutrophication. Biochar can effectively reduce long-term NH3 emissions from manure, but more research is needed to optimize mitigation of acute NH3 emissions during/agitation.
