Recent Progress in High-Strength and Robust Regenerated Cellulose Materials

Hu Tu et al.

Summary: Cellulose, as the most abundant sustainable polymer, has the potential to act as an ideal substitute for plastics due to its low cost, wide availability, and biodegradability. Recent achievements in developing cellulose green solvents and regenerated cellulose materials with high strength through bottom-up approaches have shown potential applications in textiles, biomedicine, energy storage, packaging, etc. Importantly, these cellulose-based materials can be biodegraded in soil and oceans, reducing environmental pollution.

Phosphorylase-catalyzed bottom-up synthesis of short-chain soluble cello-oligosaccharides and property-tunable cellulosic materials

Bernd Nidetzky et al.

Summary: Cellulose-based materials can be produced industrially in various forms using top-down processing, while bottom-up synthesis offers control and tunability over the final chemical structure of synthetic cellulose derivatives. Cellodextrin phosphorylase plays a key role in catalyzing glycosylation reactions and producing cellulose materials with tailored properties, expanding the applications of cellulose in diverse product classes.

Molecular crystallization directed by polymer size and overlap under dilute and crowded macromolecular conditions

Yuuki Hata et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that dissolved polymers can control caffeine crystal formation in both dilute and crowded solutions. Larger poly(ethylene glycol)s (PEGs) accelerate crystal formation in dilute solutions due to depletion attraction, while in semidilute solutions, crystal formation rate is unaffected by PEG molecular weight. These findings can be useful in developing strategies for controlling molecular self-assembly in crowded intracellular environments.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using nonionic crystalline surfactants can form a crystalline monolayer at water-organic solvent interfaces, allowing arrested shape changes of liquid-liquid interfaces. This enables the successful creation of irregular-shaped liquid droplets under various solution conditions.
