The Role of Defending Norms in Victims' Classroom Climate Perceptions and Psychosocial Maladjustment in Secondary School

Lydia Laninga-Wijnen et al.

Summary: Research shows that victims of bullying tend to perform worse in more positive classrooms, suggesting that defending norms may be counterproductive. On the other hand, popularity norms for defending positively predict students' classroom climate perceptions and feelings of belonging. Promoting popularity norms for defending may be more beneficial in interventions in secondary schools.

Bullying and Victimization Trajectories in the First Years of Secondary Education: Implications for Status and Affection

Elsje de Vries et al.

Summary: This study found that bullying and victimization trajectories were related to adolescents' social position at school, which was determined at the beginning of secondary education and remained stable over time. Although bullying serves to optimize adolescents' social position, continued bullying may lead to increased rejection, hindering bullies' long-term social development.
