A strengths-based approach to chronic pain

Summary: Nonpharmacological approaches to chronic pain are increasingly popular among therapists and health-care providers. This study examined a strengths-based approach to reduce chronic pain and enhance pain self-efficacy. The findings indicated that focusing on the strength of zest effectively increased pain self-efficacy and the capacity to function despite pain.

Men and women rank these domains in the same order, but women rate each domain more highly. Having a daily spiritual practice is the strongest predictor of importance for all domains, while character strengths have the highest correlations with the experience of all domains.
