Youth Migration Decisions in Sub-Saharan Africa: Satellite-Based Empirical Evidence from Nigeria

Mulubrhan Amare et al.

Summary: This article examines the implications of urban growth on youth migration decisions in Nigeria, finding that women and those with higher education are more likely to migrate, while youth in households with livestock are less likely to migrate. The results suggest that policy makers should adopt a differentiated, targeted, and multidimensional policy approach to address rural-urban youth migration.

Landscapes of opportunity: patterns of young people's engagement with the rural economy in sub-Saharan Africa

Kibrom A. Abay et al.

Summary: Research shows that young people in sub-Saharan Africa participate in agriculture at similar rates to older people, while engagement in non-farm wage employment and business activities changes with age, peaking in the 30s. Those in their 20s are most likely to report no activity. In more remote areas, individuals tend to leave school earlier and have lower participation in the non-farm sector compared to those in more accessible places.
