Novel Magnetic Resonance Measurements of Fouling in Operating Spiral Wound Reverse Osmosis Membrane Modules

Summary: The novel magnetic resonance measurement protocol demonstrated the ability to early, sensitively detect and quantify fouling in membrane modules; showcased the preferential accumulation of foulant material adjacent to membrane spacer sheet nodes; and revealed very localized flow channelling in response to gradual foulant accumulation through high frequency acquisition of velocity images.

Novel hole-pillar spacer design for improved hydrodynamics and biofouling mitigation in membrane filtration

Summary: Three different feed spacer designs were studied, and the novel hole-pillar spacer showed the best filtration performance with the lowest feed channel pressure drop, lowest shear stress, and highest permeate flux. Optical Coherent Tomography imaging revealed less biofilm thickness development on the proposed hole-pillar spacer.
