Polymers Exhibiting Lower Critical Solution Temperatures as a Route to Thermoreversible Gelators for Healthcare

Michael T. Cook et al.

Summary: Materials with smart behavior that can change their properties in response to external stimuli have enabled innovative technologies for healthcare applications. Thermoreversible gelators, which undergo reversible phase changes triggered by temperature, are being used for drug delivery, tissue engineering, and 3D printing. Challenges in translating these technologies include the lack of rigorous toxicological evaluation.

Tuning the Gelation of Thermoresponsive Gels Based on Triblock Terpolymers

Anna P. Constantinou et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel thermoresponsive gel material composed of ABC triblock terpolymers, with the best-performing polymer gelling at low concentrations at body temperature. Fifteen different terpolymers were synthesized via group transfer polymerization, with a focus on characterizing their gelation properties through visual tests and rheological measurements. The critical importance of achieving the optimal hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity ratio for a clear solution to gel transition and wide gelation area including body temperature was highlighted.

A library of thermoresponsive PEG-based methacrylate homopolymers: How do the molar mass and number of ethylene glycol groups affect the cloud point?

Qian Li et al.

Summary: A novel library of thermoresponsive homopolymers based on poly (ethylene glycol) was synthesized and investigated in this study. The research focused on how parameters such as molar mass, ethylene glycol group numbers, and side group chemistry affect the thermoresponsive behavior of these polymers. The results showed that the cloud points of these homopolymers decrease as the number of EG groups decreases or the molar mass increases, while the end functional group of the side group also plays a significant role.
