3D diffractive imaging of nanoparticle ensembles using an x-ray laser

Kartik Ayyer et al.

Summary: Single particle imaging at XFELs has the potential to determine the structure and dynamics of single biomolecules at room temperature. By overcoming hurdles in collecting high-quality diffraction patterns and computational purification, researchers have successfully obtained sub-nano meter resolution 3D reconstructions for biomolecular imaging. These advancements in X-ray sources, detectors, sample delivery, and data analysis algorithms illuminate new possibilities for characterizing diverse ensembles at the structural level.

Defects and plasticity in ultrastrong supercrystalline nanocomposites

D. Giuntini et al.

Summary: Supercrystalline nanocomposites consist of organically functionalized inorganic nanoparticles arranged into periodic structures with superlattice imperfections. When subjected to indentation, these materials exhibit deformation patterns similar to those seen in single crystals, accommodating plastic deformation through pile-ups, dislocations, and slip bands. The behavior of supercrystalline nanocomposites can be well described by classic shear theories of crystalline materials, displaying elastoplastic behavior along with compaction.

In Situ Constructing the Kinetic Roadmap of Octahedral Nanocrystal Assembly Toward Controlled Superlattice Fabrication

Xin Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crystallization and growth of anisotropic nanocrystals into distinct superlattices in real time, providing kinetic details and designer parameters for the scale-up fabrication of functional materials. By studying the assembly of octahedral PbS NC blocks, the researchers found that NCs preferentially self-assembled into an orientation-disordered face-centered cubic superlattice, which later transformed into a body-centered cubic superlattice with single NC-orientational ordering across individual domains. Such insights and defined parameters allowed for the scalable fabrication of large/single bcc supercrystals with coherent ordering of NC translation and atomic plane orientation.
