Human urine-based fertilizers: A review

Tristan M. P. Martin et al.

Summary: Urine contains a significant amount of nutrients, which can be separated and used in agriculture. However, different treatments and resulting fertilizers have varying characteristics and environmental impacts. This study reviewed six treatments and resulting fertilizers, comparing them in terms of nutrient forms and concentrations, fertilizer efficiency, contaminant removal, energy, and chemical consumption. Holistic studies and pilot facilities are needed to evaluate the entire value chain.

Novel NoMix toilet concept for efficient separation of urine and feces and its design optimization using computational fluid mechanics

Joel Gundlach et al.

Summary: The study presents a novel design idea for NoMix toilets, utilizing the tea pot effect to improve urine collection efficiency. By optimizing curvature radius and V-profile groove width, the amount of flush water entering the urine collector can be reduced to less than 2.5%.

The importance of socioeconomic conditions in mitigating climate change impacts and achieving Sustainable Development Goals

Jing-Yu Liu et al.

Summary: The study suggests that changes in socioeconomic conditions are more critical than climate policies in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in areas related to food security, energy affordability, and the simultaneous achievement of multiple SDGs. The paper emphasizes the importance of recognizing the benefits of a coordinated approach to implementing climate policies and promoting socioeconomic changes by policymakers.

Biotechnological wastewater treatment in small-scale wastewater treatment plants

Ausra Mazeikiene et al.

Summary: The article analyzes the performance of two small-scale wastewater treatment plants over a ten-month period, finding that the smaller plant with better insulation and longer sludge retention time achieved higher purification efficiency. The small plant effectively removed ammonium nitrogen, with very low remaining levels, and required less frequent removal of excess sludge. The smaller plant also achieved a 20% greater effectiveness in eliminating phosphorus, using four times less electrical energy compared to the larger plant.

Moving up the On-Site Sanitation ladder in urban India through better systems and standards

Shubhagato Dasgupta et al.

Summary: Wastewater management in low and lower-middle income countries predominantly relies on On-Site Sanitation (OSS) systems. In India, the lack of regulatory oversight has led to households constructing and operating OSS systems that do not comply with national technical standards, posing a risk to water sources and public health. The paper suggests that local and national governments should rethink system design, promote prefabrication of systems, and update technical standards to unlock the potential of OSS as a safe and long-term wastewater management solution for sustainable urban sanitation futures.

Willingness among food consumers to recycle human urine as crop fertiliser: Evidence from a multinational survey

Prithvi Simha et al.

Summary: Source-separating sanitation systems have the potential to reduce agriculture's impacts on global nitrogen and phosphorus, but consumer acceptance of urine-fertilised food varies by country. Cognitive factors and social norms play a key role in influencing people's willingness to adopt new sanitation behaviors.
