La Nina weather impacts dietary patterns and dietary diversity among children in the Peruvian Amazon

Ramya Ambikapathi et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of ENSO on child diets in the Peruvian Amazon, revealing a reduction in the intake of plantains and sugar among girls under ENSO exposure, as well as a decrease in dietary diversity under moderate La Nina conditions. Additionally, girls in households were found to consume more donated foods.

Substitution of inland fisheries with aquaculture and chicken undermines human nutrition in the Peruvian Amazon

Sebastian A. Heilpern et al.

Summary: Substituting wild inland fisheries with chicken and aquaculture may exacerbate iron deficiencies and limit essential fatty acid supplies, while increasing zinc and protein supplies. Chicken and aquaculture production also have negative environmental impacts, such as increased greenhouse gas emissions, agricultural land use, and eutrophication.
