Does Lower-Stratospheric Shear Influence the Mesoscale Organization of Convection?

Todd P. Lane

Summary: This study introduces a new mechanism showing that lower-stratospheric wind shear influences the organization of mesoscale convection. Lower-stratospheric shear weakens systems propagating in the opposite direction, creating a preference for organized systems to propagate in the same direction as the shear vector. This result has important implications for stratosphere-troposphere interactions, numerical modeling, and understanding of convective organization.

Variability in QBO Temperature Anomalies on Annual and Decadal Time Scales

Zane Martin et al.

Summary: The study found that in boreal winter, the temperature anomalies induced by QBO were stronger on the equator but weaker off the equator, with differences in amplitude compensating for meridional temperature gradients. Similar patterns were observed on decadal time scales, with stronger anomalies seen in the years 1999-2019 compared to 1979-99. The causes of these changes and their potential relevance to the MJO-QBO relationship remain unknown.

Summary: This paper describes stratospheric waves in ERA5 and evaluates the contributions of different types of waves to the driving of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO).resolved waves contribute to both eastward and westward accelerations near the equator, mainly by the way of the vertical flux of zonal momentum.

Initialized Earth System prediction from subseasonal to decadal timescales

Gerald A. Meehl et al.

Summary: Initialized climate predictions offer distinct benefits for multiple stakeholders on subseasonal, seasonal, and decadal timescales. While there have been some skilful predictions in various areas, challenges remain, and future efforts should focus on reducing model error, improving communication of forecasts, and enhancing process and mechanistic understanding to increase predictive skill and confidence.

Stratospheric ozone and quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) interaction with the tropical troposphere on intraseasonal and interannual timescales: a normal-mode perspective

Breno Raphaldini et al.

Summary: The Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) is the main controller of tropical weather on intraseasonal timescales, with recent research showing that the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) affects the interannual variability of MJO. The interaction between these two phenomena is not fully understood, but studies indicate contributions from global Kelvin and Rossby waves. Equatorial stratospheric ozone and stratospheric zonal winds are found to be connected with MJO at certain time periods, and the role of normal-mode interactions in stratosphere-troposphere coupling is explored through linear regression.

An Observational History of the Direct Influence of the Stratospheric Quasi-biennial Oscillation on the Tropical and Subtropical Upper Troposphere and Lower Stratosphere

Matthew H. Hitchman et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the observational studies on the influence of the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) on the tropical and subtropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) over different time periods. The study reveals a coherent, antiphased response between the tropics and subtropics, seasonal and geographical variations in QBO W-E tropopause temperature, pressure, and zonal wind, and the influence of QBO on convection and atmospheric circulation in different regions and seasons.
