Progress in hybrid composite Nafion®-based membranes for proton exchange fuel cell application

Y. Prykhodko et al.

Summary: Over 50% of energy is currently produced by burning non-renewable fossil fuels, leading to the release of greenhouse gases and environmental pollution. As a result, research on renewable energy sources, storage, and energy transformation devices has become increasingly important in recent years. Fuel cells, particularly proton exchange membrane fuel cells, are considered a promising energy device with ongoing developments in membrane technology.

Carbon nanotube, graphene oxide and montmorillonite as conductive fillers in polymer electrolyte membrane for fuel cell: an overview

Maryam Taufiq Musa et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotube, graphene oxide, and montmorillonite are highly promising conductive fillers with outstanding cell performances based on previous studies. These materials are chosen as incorporated fillers recently due to their rolling up direction (chirality vector of graphene sheet), reactive functional groups attached on the carbon atoms and ionic multilayers of the tetrahedral and octahedral sheet, respectively. High proton conductivity, low electronic conductivity, low fuel permeability, low water transport, low production cost, and high mechanical stability in both dry and wet condition are properties that should be portrayed by a good hybrid membrane.

Superacid sulfated SnO2 doped with CeO2: A novel inorganic filler to simultaneously enhance conductivity and stabilities of proton exchange membrane

Lili Liu et al.

Summary: By compositing with superacids of sulfated SnO2 and SnO2-xCeO(2), the trade-off between proton conductivity and stabilities of sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) (SPAES)-based proton exchange membranes is broken, resulting in composite membranes with excellent performance. The superacids in the composite membranes provide additional active sites and proton-conducting channels, leading to higher water absorption and proton conductivity compared to the control membrane.

Adenosine triphosphate@graphene oxide proton channels for proton exchange membranes constructed via electrostatic layer-by-layer deposition

Hang Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, bioinspired proton conducting channels are designed by immobilizing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets to form ordered ATP@GO laminates in Nafion. The composite membrane exhibits low methanol permeability and high proton conductivity, leading to enhanced performance of direct methanol fuel cells. The proposed ATP channel strategy serves as a reference for developing high-performance PEMs for fuel cells.

A review of proton exchange membranes based on protic ionic liquid/polymer blends for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Hosni Ahmed Elwan et al.

Summary: Protic ionic liquids are receiving increasing research attention due to their versatile properties, particularly as ideal electrolytes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Blending various polymers with protic ILs to form solid films for PEMFCs has been explored. Five conventional polymers combined with protic ILs are discussed in detail, along with other polymers used in PEMs based on protic ILs, to provide comprehensive coverage in this area of research.
