An investigation is performed on the heat transfer performance of free single jet impingement using SiO2-Water nanofluids with various volume fractions (1%, 2% and 3%). The effects of the varying nanoparticles volume fractions, Reynolds number, nozzle-to-plate distance, and the impact angle on the heat transfer performances of the jet impingement of nanofluids are discussed. The heat transfer performances along the radial direction are also analyzed. The experimental results show that the application of nanofluids significantly improves the heat transfer features of single free impingement jet. For the SiO2-water nano fluid containing 3.0% nanoparticles volume fraction with Reynolds numbers from 8000 to 13,000, the convective heat transfer coefficient is 40% higher than pure water. The convective heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid increases with the volume fraction of nanoparticles and Reynolds number. Heat transfer coefficient decreases along the radial direction. Finally, a heat transfer correlation of nanofluids for the free single jet impingement has been proposed taking the effects of the suspended nanoparticles and the condition of impinging jet into consideration.
