Conjugated Nanohoops Incorporating Donor, Acceptor, Hetero- or Polycyclic Aromatics

Mathias Hermann et al.

Summary: In the past 13 years, several synthetic strategies have been developed to access [n]cycloparaphenylenes ([n]CPPs) and related conjugated nanohoops. These nanohoops have shown potential applications in optoelectronic devices and as templates for carbon nanomaterials.

Chiral Dibenzopentalene-Based Conjugated Nanohoops through Stereoselective Synthesis

Mathias Hermann et al.

Summary: Conjugated nanohoops exhibit unexpected optoelectronic properties and chirality, with bending of the pi-system leading to the synthesis of chiral hoops. By incorporating dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes and using a bent diketone unit, chiral conjugated nanohoops were stereoselectively synthesized with small HOMO-LUMO gap and ambipolar electrochemical character. The chiral hoop showed stability even at high temperatures and was capable of accommodating two C60 molecules, as indicated by binding studies.

Asymmetric synthesis, structures, and chiroptical properties of helical cycloparaphenylenes

Juntaro Nogami et al.

Summary: In this article, perfectly diastereo- and enantiocontrolled catalytic synthesis of a cycloparaphenylene with four helical and two planar chiralities showing good chiroptical responses as chiral organic molecules was achieved. The importance of the highly symmetric multiply helical structure in the cylindrical axis in obtaining good chiroptical responses was established through experimental and theoretical studies.

Single-molecule conductance of dibenzopentalenes: antiaromaticity and quantum interference

Maximilian Schmidt et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of antiaromaticity and destructive quantum interference on charge transport through dibenzo-[a,e]pentalene (DBP). It is found that 5,10-connectivity leads to high single-molecule conductance, while 2,7-connectivity results in low conductance due to destructive quantum interference. Comparison between 5,10-DBP, phenyl, and anthracene analogues shows that despite anthracene having a larger HOMO-LUMO gap, 5,10-DBP exhibits higher conductance due to unfavorable level alignment.
