Open versus Interpenetrated: Switchable Supramolecular Trajectories in Mechanosynthesis of a Halogen-Bonded Borromean Network

Luca Catalano et al.

Summary: Achieving precise control over topologically intricate molecular architectures remains a challenge for chemists due to their inherent structural complexity. We have demonstrated a simple solvent-free strategy to selectively prepare two multi-component supramolecular crystalline systems based on the halogen bond, one with an unknot topology and the other with a Borromean-type entanglement. Real-time in situ monitoring of the solvent-free mechanochemical synthesis of these three-component halogen-bonded ionic co-crystals revealed that the choice of milling conditions leads to a switch in the supramolecular reaction trajectory, resulting in the selective formation of an open halogen-bonded network or a halogen-bonded Borromean-type assembly.

Beyond hydrogen bonding: recent trends of outer sphere interactions in transition metal catalysis

Jonathan Trouve et al.

Summary: Homogeneous catalytic reactions are typically controlled by the stereoelectronic nature of ligands binding to metals. The first coordination sphere effects and second coordination sphere effects, inspired by enzymes, rely on interactions such as hydrogen bonding for fine control of activity and selectivity. These interactions are being rationally implemented to control reactivity in a remote fashion, similar to enzymes, for challenges that cannot be purely solved by hydrogen bonding.
