Emergence of dynamic vortex glasses in disordered polar active fluids

Amelie Chardac et al.

Summary: This study unveils a state of strongly disordered active matter known as a dynamical vortex glass, which does not have counterparts in equilibrium. Through a combination of microfluidic experiments and theory, it is shown how colloidal flocks collectively navigate through disordered environments without relaxing the topological singularities of their flows. The mechanism of quenched isotropic disorder turning active liquids into dynamical vortex glasses is argued to shape the collective dynamics of a broad class of disordered active matter.

Directional clogging and phase separation for disk flow through periodic and diluted obstacle arrays

C. Reichhardt et al.

Summary: As disk density increases, the average disk velocity decreases and becomes direction-dependent, leading to a heterogeneous clogged state in the system. The clogging is fragile but can be unclogged by changing the driving angle.

Active matter commensuration and frustration effects on periodic substrates

C. Reichhardt et al.

Summary: Self-driven particles coupled to a periodic obstacle array exhibit commensuration effects, producing commensurate crystalline states as well as frustrated or amorphous states depending on the obstacle sizes. These effects are associated with peaks in sixfold ordering and maximum cluster size, and exhibit peaks and dips in mobility when a drift force is introduced, similar to studies on superconducting vortices and colloidal particles.

Pervasive orientational and directional locking at geometrically heterogeneous sliding interfaces

Xin Cao et al.

Summary: Understanding the drift motion and dynamical locking of crystalline clusters on patterned substrates is crucial for the diffusion and manipulation of nano- and microscale objects. Locking features are shown to be correlated with Moire patterns of contacting surfaces, with complexities arising from different surface symmetries. A generalized formalism is provided to describe the relation between locking orientation and direction with arbitrary lattice symmetries.
