Stratigraphy and Chronology of Sodicho Rockshelter - A New Sedimentological Record of Past Environmental Changes and Human Settlement Phases in Southwestern Ethiopia

Elena A. Hensel et al.

Summary: This study presents the first results of sedimentological, geochemical analyses and radiocarbon dating at Sodicho Rockshelter in the southwestern Ethiopian Highlands, providing evidence of high altitude settlement during the chronostratigraphic gap of MIS 2 and subsequent time slices. The excavation revealed layers dating back to around 27 ka, including settlement phases of Late Pleistocene and Holocene hunter-gatherers, unveiling information on environmental changes. The multiproxy approach used helped establish a general stratigraphy of the site, showing a variation of allochthonous and autochthonous geogenic deposits, and anthropogenic accumulation processes.
