How to reduce household costs for people with tuberculosis: a longitudinal costing survey in Nepal

Suman Chandra Gurung et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the costs and socio-economic impact of tuberculosis patients diagnosed through active and passive case finding in Nepal. The findings showed that patients identified through active case finding incurred lower costs before and during treatment, with a severe socio-economic impact on households affected by TB. It was also found that catastrophic costs were associated with lack of education. Efforts should be made to extend social protection policies to reduce the socio-economic impact of TB on vulnerable populations in Nepal.
