Structure-property relationship in contrasting aggregation-induced enhancement/quenching of emission in rigid aromatic molecules

Yosuke Tani et al.

Summary: This study reveals the structure-AIE property relationship in benzo- and/or thieno-fused pyrano[3,2-b]pyran-2,6-dione derivatives. While benzo-fused PPDs exhibit AIE activity, bis-thieno-fused PPDs show fluorescence quenching in the crystal. The research demonstrates that the AIE activity in rigid skeletons can be controlled through vibronic interactions, providing insights into integrating AIE with the optoelectronic functions of polycyclic fused pi-systems.

Fluorescence emission enhancement of a T-shaped benzimidazole with a mechanically-interlocked 'suit'

Houyang Xu et al.

Summary: A fluorescent T-shaped benzimidazole was successfully incorporated into a bicyclic macrocycle to form a suitane through supramolecular templated-synthesis, resulting in enhanced fluorescence emission. This method provides a potential pathway for the development of new complex fluorescent materials by taking advantage of mechanical bonding and molecular packing.

Regioisomeric AIE-active luminogens with a substituent aldehyde group for controllable and reversible photochromic behavior and sensitive fluorescence detection of hydrogen sulfite

Hai-Xia Yu et al.

Summary: Three isomeric tetraarylethylene derivatives with unique aggregation-induced emission (AIE) luminescence properties were designed and synthesized, exhibiting remarkable photochromic behaviors with distinct influences from the positions of the substituent aldehyde groups. The meta-substituted isomer showed a fast reversible photo-switch with high colorimetric contrast in the solid state, highlighting the potential applications of these AIE-active photochromic molecules. Additionally, the reaction of the aldehyde group with hydrogen sulfite (HSO3-) allowed the luminogens to exhibit a turn-off fluorescence response to HSO3- in high water content, indicating their prospective applications in information security and specific fluorescence sensing.

Aggregation-mediated photo-responsive luminescence of cyanostilbene based cruciform AIEgens

Zhibo Zhang et al.

Summary: The study synthesized two cyanostilbene-based AIEgens and found reversible E/Z isomerization in solution, while [2+2] cycloaddition occurred in aggregates or solid state. Photochromic luminescence can be achieved by dispersing the fluorophores in a PMMA matrix, and obvious mechanochromic luminescence was observed in the solid state.
