Test-retest reliability of approach-avoidance conflict decision-making during functional magnetic resonance imaging in healthy adults

Timothy J. McDermott et al.

Summary: This study aimed to replicate previous findings and examine the test-retest reliability of behavioral and neural responses during an approach-avoidance conflict task. Results showed that approach behavior was modulated by conflict during decision-making, and specific brain regions were activated during affective outcomes. The study concluded that certain behavioral and neuroimaging responses during approach-avoidance conflict decision-making are replicable and sufficiently reliable for future utility.

Greater decision uncertainty characterizes a transdiagnostic patient sample during approach-avoidance conflict: a computational modelling approach

Ryan Smith et al.

Summary: This study found that reduced confidence in how to act, rather than increased emotional conflict, may explain maladaptive approach-avoidance behaviors in people with psychiatric disorders. Participants with depression and/or anxiety disorders and substance use disorders showed higher decision uncertainty, while those with substance use disorders also had lower emotional conflict compared to healthy controls.
