Oil shales from the K-Pg boundary interval of Jordan - Climate controlled archives of surface and bottom water conditions in a shelf setting

Victor M. Giraldo-Gomez et al.

Summary: The study reconstructs the variations of water conditions in the Jafr Sub-basin resulting from climate changes by integrating data from geochemistry, clay mineralogy, and benthic foraminifera. Fluctuation of organic matter content and the response to nutrient fluxes are key factors, with indications of oxygen-depleted bottom waters and ecologically stressful surface waters. Warm-humid and warm-arid climatic conditions are linked to the preservation of organic matter and sulfur content.
