A Rh(iii)-catalyzed three-component C-H bond functionalization protocol has been successfully used to synthesize complex polycyclic BINOL derivatives, with the in situ formation of intermediate amides from aldehydes and amines. This high efficiency strategy allows for rapid and selective synthesis of diverse BINOL compounds in a step-economical manner from three readily accessible starting materials in one-pot.
