GWTC-2: Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo during the First Half of the Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.

Physical approach to the marginalization of LIGO calibration uncertainties

Salvatore Vitale et al.

Summary: Researchers have proposed a new method, physiCal, which can consider calibration errors during the source characterization step by directly utilizing all available information about the instrument calibration process. This method performs equally as well as the current method used by the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration, but also allows for improvement in measuring specific components of instrument control through astrophysical calibration.

Rapid and robust parameter inference for binary mergers

Neil J. Cornish

Summary: The detection rate for compact binary mergers has increased with the improvement in sensitivity of ground-based gravitational wave detectors. Automated low-latency algorithms are essential for timely alerts and follow-up observations. A new analysis method has been developed for robust parameter inference in a matter of minutes, addressing data quality issues such as glitches.

Open data from the first and second observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo

Rich Abbott et al.

Summary: Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo are monitoring the sky and collecting gravitational-wave strain data with sufficient sensitivity. This paper describes the data recorded during their first and second observing runs, including gravitational-wave strain time series sampled at 16384 Hz. The datasets are freely accessible through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center, providing essential data-quality information, documentation, tutorials, and supporting software for LIGO and Virgo data analysis.

Modeling compact binary signals and instrumental glitches in gravitational wave data

Katerina Chatziioannou et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new analysis method for gravitational wave data that simultaneously models the compact binary signal using templates and the instrumental glitches using sine-Gaussian wavelets. The proposed model for glitches is generic and can be applied to a wide range of glitch morphologies without special tuning, allowing for efficient separation of signals and glitches and downstream inference analyses.

BayesWave analysis pipeline in the era of gravitational wave observations

Neil J. Cornish et al.

Summary: BayesWave is an algorithm for analyzing gravitational wave transient signals through frame functions and trans-dimensional sampling, adapting the model complexity to data requirements. The flexibility of the algorithm allows for a variety of analyses, including reconstructing unmodeled signals, cross-checks for compact binaries, and separating coherent signals from incoherent instrumental noise transients.
