Birds and Bioenergy within the Americas: A Cross-National, Social-Ecological Study of Ecosystem Service Tradeoffs

Jessie L. Knowlton et al.

Summary: The study examined public perceptions and ecosystem service tradeoffs between bioenergy crop production and forest habitat-related supporting services for birds in four countries, with Brazil and Argentina showing the greatest negative impact on birds from bioenergy feedstock cover types. Understanding people's values and perceptions can help inform better policy and management decisions regarding land use changes.

The impact of oil palm on rural livelihoods and tropical forest landscapes in Latin America

A. Castellanos-Navarrete et al.

Summary: This study reviews the impact of oil palm industry development on rural livelihoods and landscapes in Latin America, finding that industrial plantations pose the greatest threat in weakly governed forest frontier areas, while oil palm is beneficial to rural areas under policies guaranteeing land rights and supporting smallholders. However, policies that favor smallholders do not eliminate conflicts between oil palm smallholders (often migrant settlers) and forest-dependent communities opposing the industry.
