Quantifying the destructuring of a thixotropic colloidal suspension using falling ball viscometry

Rajkumar Biswas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the settling dynamics of falling spheres in Laponite suspensions through experiments and mathematical modeling, revealing that larger diameter balls fail to reach terminal velocity. The proposed mathematical model accurately predicts the time dependence of ball velocity and allows estimation of the rates of destructuring of the thixotropic suspensions.

Lorentz forces induced by a static magnetic field have negligible effects on results from classical molecular dynamics simulations of aqueous solutions

Tomasz Panczyk et al.

Summary: The study found that the Lorentz force has minimal impact on the properties of water, atomic ions, and larger molecules in solution, with apparent variations with magnetic-field strength being solely statistical fluctuations. The magnitude of the Lorentz force is up to eight orders of magnitude smaller than the average force coming from nonmagnetic forces and thermal fluctuations in the liquid phase at normal temperatures. Previous reports of significant magnetic-field effects are discussed, with theoretical arguments precluding the effects of the Lorentz force.
