Rayleigh-Taylor instability with gravity reversal

D. Livescu et al.

Summary: Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of Rayleigh-Taylor instability at high Atwood numbers were conducted, observing changes in mixing layer structure and turbulence under reversed and zero gravity conditions. Following gravity reversal, a complex transient process was observed, affecting flow anisotropy and turbulent kinetic energy transport. While some turbulence quantities underwent significant changes, others remained unaffected by the gravity reversal, presenting challenges for existing turbulence models.

Single- and dual-mode Rayleigh-Taylor instability at microscopic scale

Juchun Ding et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant differences between microscopic and macroscopic Rayleigh-Taylor instability, including the role of viscosity in suppressing perturbation growth, weaker nonlinearity at a microscopic scale, and random fluctuations from atomic motion causing droplet detachment. Additionally, the mode coupling behavior in dual-mode RTI at a microscopic scale is different from the macroscopic counterpart, leading to a new prescription for governing the growth of each mode.

Direct numerical simulations of incompressible Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities at low and medium Atwood numbers

Arash Hamzehloo et al.

Summary: This study conducted direct numerical simulations of incompressible immiscible Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities in 2D and 3D using different combinations of parameters. It was found that high Reynolds numbers with significant surface tension could prevent specific instabilities within the bubble region, and a relationship was proposed between the vertical distance of the bubble and spike versus the Atwood number. Additionally, the growth of the interface for both single-mode and multi-mode instabilities showed exponential behavior initially, with the latter showing a strong dependence on mesh resolution after the exponential growth phase.
