Spodium bonding and other non-covalent interactions assisted supramolecular aggregation in a new mercury(II) complex of a nicotinohydrazide derivative

Ghodrat Mahmoudi et al.

Summary: A new Hg(II) coordination compound with a unique pentacoordinated structure was synthesized, forming a 1D polymeric chain and a 2D layer with a binodal 3,4-connected hcb topology. The crystal packing is mainly characterized by intermolecular contacts, including H?H, H?C, H?N, H?S and C?C interactions.

Change in molecular shapes of the trinuclear Cu2IIZnII complexes on Schiff base reduction: structural and theoretical investigations

Alokesh Hazari et al.

Summary: Two new trinuclear heterometallic complexes, [(CuL1)(2)Zn(N-3)(mu(1,3)-N-3)]·H2O (1) and [(CuL2)(2)Zn(N-3)(mu(1,3)-N-3)] (2), have been synthesized and characterized. The molecular structures of these complexes are different from their unreduced analogues, 1A and 1B, with differences rationalized through theoretical calculations. The presence of intramolecular spodium bonds and coordination of azide ions play key roles in the structural differences observed between the complexes.

π-Hole spodium bonding in tri-coordinated Hg(ii) complexes

Rosa M. Gomila et al.

Summary: The crucial role of π-hole spodium bonding in tri-coordinated planar Hg(ii) complexes is highlighted in this article, showcasing its relevance as a structural guiding force in crystal structures. Analysis of the Cambridge structural database revealed that HgX3 structures are predominantly T-shaped and function as directional π-hole donors for electron rich atoms.

Differentiating intramolecular spodium bonds from coordination bonds in two polynuclear zinc(ii) Schiff base complexes

Tanmoy Basak et al.

Summary: Two new zinc(ii) complexes with different chemical structures have been synthesized, where the variation in the aromatic ring of the Schiff base ligand influences the final solid state structure, and the methoxy and ethoxy groups exhibit different interactions with Zn(ii) through oxygen-zinc bonds. The analysis was conducted using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and a combination of quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and noncovalent interaction (NCI) plot index computational tools.

Ferrocene decorated unusual mercury(ii) dithiocarbamate coordination polymers: crystallographic and computational studies

Amita Singh et al.

Summary: Three new one dimensional ferrocene decorated Hg(ii) based coordination polymers with different halogen derivatives have been synthesized and characterized by various analytical techniques. The compounds exhibit interesting mercury-halogen spodium bonding interactions and have been studied using Hirshfeld surface analyses, density functional theory and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). Results indicate moderately strong mercury-halogen interactions in all three polymers with the presence of spodium bonding.

Role of non-covalent interactions in the supramolecular architectures of mercury(II) diphenyldithiophosphates: An experimental and theoretical investigation

Pretam Kumar et al.

Summary: The essential role of non-covalent interactions in the supramolecular organization of two mercury(ii) complexes with sulfur donor ligands has been investigated. The complexes were characterized by various analytical techniques, and their molecular and crystal structures revealed polymer and monomer units with specific bonding patterns. The presence of hydrogen bonds, spodium bonds, and CH... pi interactions were confirmed through theoretical analysis, and the intermolecular contacts were examined using Hirshfeld surface analysis and Bader's Quantum Theory of Atoms-in-Molecules (QTAIM).
