The occurrence of secondary cases of VEM in previously unaffected populations confirms its transmissible nature, with measures such as prolonged hospitalization and improved living conditions leading to a decline in incidence and eventual disappearance of VEM. No new cases have been reported since 2012.
The occurrence of secondary cases of VEM in previously unaffected populations indicates that VEM is a transmissible disease with a mode of transmission characteristic of chronic infections. Reduce patient-to-patient contact in the acute and subacute periods of VEM with the surrounding population through prolonged hospitalization of patients in specialized medical institutions and improvement of social and hygienic living conditions in Yakut villages led to a slow decline in the incidence in the 1980s and 1990s and its complete disappearance in the 2000s. No new cases of VEM have been reported since 2012.
