In Situ Studies of Methanol Decomposition Over Cu(111) and Cu2O/Cu(111): Effects of Reactant Pressure, Surface Morphology, and Hot Spots of Active Sites

Ivan Orozco et al.

Summary: The dissociative adsorption of methanol on Cu(111) and ultrathin Cu2O films was investigated using a combination of AP-XPS, STM, and DFT calculations. It was found that methanol adsorbed dissociatively on Cu(111) forming methoxy, formaldehyde, and formate, while on Cu2O/Cu(111) it decomposed into a wider variety of species due to interactions with lattice oxygen. The difference in reactivity was attributed to the presence of oxygen on the oxide surface.

Water enables mild oxidation of methane to methanol on gold single-atom catalysts

Laihao Luo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that water under light irradiation facilitates high-selective oxidation of methane to methanol by Au single atom catalysts, while also proving that water can be regarded as a catalyst due to its recycling during the entire process.

Understanding Methanol Synthesis on Inverse ZnO/CuOx/Cu Catalysts: Stability of CH3O Species and Dynamic Nature of the Surface

Ivan Orozco et al.

Summary: Inverse ZnO/Cu catalysts play a crucial role in the conversion of CO2 to methanol. Through a combination of experimental techniques and theoretical calculations, it was found that methoxy adsorption is preferential on the ZnO regions of the catalyst, and the breaking of the O-H bond in methanol is an exothermic process. The active sites containing *CH3O, *HCOO, and *CHx species exhibit dynamic structural changes during adsorption and desorption processes.
